Nonsurgical Gum Treatment

A Minimally Invasive Way to Preserve Teeth

Gum disease is a pervasive problem in the US, even among those who brush and floss diligently. Tartar can build up in the deep pockets around teeth and lead to decay and even tooth loss. However, these problems can often be addressed by minimally invasive, nonsurgical gum treatments like scaling and root planing.

Scaling and Root Planing Procedure

Sometimes called a “deep clean,” a scaling and root planing is a quick method of removing tartar from gum pockets and teeth roots without surgery. You’ll be offered a local anesthetic, and the entire procedure usually takes less than an hour.

Tartar is scraped from the periodontal pockets around your teeth and these pockets are thoroughly cleaned out. The roots of the teeth are also smoothed to ensure that bacteria and bacterial toxins are removed.

Benefits of Scaling and Root Planing

While severe cases of gum disease may require surgery, many incidents can be controlled using only scaling and root planing. This deep cleaning procedure can help with receding gums, improve gum bleeding and sensitivity, and prevent future tooth loss.
